Enticed to meeting her in Exeter, he soon finds himself drawn into a web of deceit that has its roots in a tragic event that happened over forty years earlier. His own liberty becomes at risk as the police investigate the suspicious death of an unknown elderly woman with whom he appears to have been in contact. A solicitor, a journalist, and a priest, all friends from Malcolm's student days in Exeter, try to establish his innocence and protect him from a possible serious physical assault, while facing the risk that they too could be implicated in a crime.
