After recent news of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism across the United States has made many Jews uneasy. West Hempstead resident Michael Stein responded by writing a fictional novel, Decision 2030, about a future generation of Jews that is suffering from large-scale physical and political attacks.Decision 2030 presents a chilling account of America in the not-so-distant future. In the book, the seeds of anti-Semitism have taken root and threaten to destroy the United States' Jewish population. The Jews of Grayvelt are torn in two different directions. On the one hand, some individuals choose to remain in the United States and to fight with the help of civilian soldiers. Others decide to leave America behind, and to move to a new community in the northern part of Israel.Author Michael Stein shows the importance of tolerance for those who may be different from us. Throughout the book, Jews from across the spectrum of religious observance treat one another with kindness and respect. Furthermore, several non-Jewish couples help the Jews in any way they can, even putting their own lives on the line in order to protect their Jewish friends.Stein shows numerous viewpoints in his book, with characters from various religious backgrounds and walks of life. The names of the two major Jewish communities--"Grayvelt" in America and "Kfar Afar" in Israel--illustrate the fact that things exist not in black and white extremes, but rather in shades of gray. ["Grayvelt" means "gray world" in Yiddish, and "Kfar Afar" means "gray village" in Hebrew.]The book contains something for everyone: wild car chases, fire bombings, romance, and even some Torah. It raises a lot of questions about what it really means to be a Jew, and about whether America can still be considered the "Land of the Free."Throughout the book, the reader wonders what the ultimate outcome will be: will the Jews of Grayvelt stay behind, or will they move to Kfar in Israel?
