After narrowly surviving the removal of an ancient curse from the Etruscan site they have dug for years, archaeologists Tanny and Jim Lewis must face the consequences of unfinished business. The cursed gold stolen from the site is still at large, as is the man, Tanny's ex, Marc Short, who stole it.

Although profoundly changed by the exorcism, Marc must find a way out of a criminal maze of his own construction and also dispose of the gold. The apocalyptic cult that promises to solve both of his problems only ensnares him in yet-deeper danger as they make the most audacious fake of all time. When a genuine treasure found in the center of Rome launches the appearance of the fake, Tanny's metallurgical expertise is called upon to debunk it, shutting the door on Marc's only chance of escape.
