Filler Up is a mostly true history of a southern family as they met the challenges of life. Beginning during the Civil War when his father and older brothers went to fight, twelve year old William became the protector and provider for his mother and sisters. He grew up fast as he learned the ways of a man during the Border Wars in Missouri. At a very early age he formulated the principles that would direct his life. He taught his son, Robert, to love the life of ranching... taught him to be a 'stand up man' as they worked together in the heat and in the cold. "Son, you live or die by your word. You don't change it!" Robert passed this strength of character on to his children. This third generation of Fillers faced the hardship of the Great Depression during their youth and young adult life. They did not give in to discouragement when life was hard, nor did they abandon love for family. They came through those dark days with strength of character and determination to continue growing and making life better. They did their part during WWI and WWII. This is a story of variety and action... family life, working cattle, Indian raids and the terrible grief of losing a child are examples. You will be drawn into their lives and experience their joy and their pain. Some of the stories that I have selected are humorous and entertaining. Some tug at your heart strings as they depict the emotional pain that people endured during those times. Yet they came out of it stronger and wiser for having had the experience.
