"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;..." This first section of scripture helps readers realize this is not a second or even a third hand recollection. This is first hand knowledge. A knowledge that causes us to look deep within ourselves to exam our love and our fellowship with God, with others, with our own self. In our world of individual self-importance, arrogance, and conceit the threat of misguided thinking captivates individuals holding them hostage and places us/them into boxes/pods, if you will, of our own making. It is good to be proud and confident and even love yourself - caution is given to be those things in Christ power and love - NOT YOUR OWN. 1 John guides our way. He enlightens us to new/renew fresh very relevant ways to empower each reader to live a close, intimate, and yes, godly life, showing and feeling the love of Christ.
