The poems about combat were in most cases actual experiences lived by Speedy as a combat pilot in three wars: World War II, Cold War and Vietnam. His soon to be headquarters supervisors in the Vietnam war could not believe the dangers he encounterd until they managed to accompany him on a night mission.
