The area became home to Asher Brown Durand, the father of American landscape painting, and Seth Boyden, who was called "one of America's greatest inventors" by Thomas Edison. Theodore Roosevelt spent summers at his uncle's Maplewood estate and enjoyed the clear
mountain air.
