Slave Narratives is a collection of firsthand accounts of the experiences of African Americans who were enslaved in the United States prior to the Civil War. These narratives were compiled by the Work Projects Administration (WPA) in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project, which aimed to provide employment for writers during the Great Depression. The book includes interviews with former slaves from across the country, ranging from those who were born into slavery to those who were enslaved as adults. The narratives offer a unique perspective on the harsh realities of slavery, including the physical and emotional abuse, the forced separation of families, and the daily struggles for survival. Despite the difficult subject matter, the narratives also offer glimpses of hope and resilience, as many of the former slaves found ways to resist their enslavement and maintain their dignity and humanity. Overall, Slave Narratives is a powerful and important historical document that sheds light on a dark chapter in American history.""When my Missis took me away from the river bottom I lived in Poolesville where the Kohlhoss home and garage is. I worked around the house and garden. I remember when the Yankee and Confederate soldiers both came to Poolesville. Capn Sam White (son of the doctor) he join the Confederate in Virginia. He come home and say he goin to take me along back with him for to serve him. But the Yankees came and he left very sudden and leave me behind. I was glad I didn't have to go with him. I saw all that fightin around Poolesville. I used to like to watch em fightin. I saw a Yankee soldier shoot a Confederate and kill him. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
