This book is not meant to teach the reader about stem cells in a scholarly way. Rather, it will explain the relevance of the different stem cells in the context of potential medical applications. Its ultimate goal is provide unbiased and easy to follow information to you, the interested reader, the patient, the concerned parent, or even the curious investor to be better positioned to identify credible medical progress and what it holds for the future. Although the potential of stem cells for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is very real and promising, it is often ignored that for decades, cancer specialists have been performing adult stem cell transplants using bone marrow stem cells, initially from siblings and later also from unrelated volunteer donors or umbilical cord blood. Among the many diseases that can now be treated with a bone marrow stem cell transplant, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma are the most common. This book tells the stories of patients whose lives have been transformed by this remarkable procedure. The author's career as a stem cell transplant physician and scientist on the forefront of this medical revolution has afforded him the opportunity to talk to numerous patients and laymen about this topic and learn the importance of presenting this complex field balanced and easy to comprehend.
