The First Gift tells the story of six-year-old Griffin, who attends Bahai childrens class, where he learns that he has a soul that was given to him by God. However, the teaching leaves him confused. Where is his soul? Intrigued, he asks his brother Paul for more detail, but Paul is in a hurry and can only tell him briefly that Griffins soul is Gods first gift to him. But where is his soul? Griffin wonders. He checks everywhere he can think ofhis pockets, the car he rides home in, his bedroom. When he doesnt find it, he worries that he doesnt have a soul after all. His mother, sensing something is wrong, begins to talk to him, learns of his fears, and comforts him with an explanation of his soul that is based on the Bahai teachings. After talking to his mother, Griffin feels better and understands more clearly how he received his soul, as well as Gods love for him.
