Fluoride controls the initiation and progression of carious lesions. Intensive laboratory and epidemiologic research on the mechanism of action of fluoride in preventing caries indicates that fluoride's predominant effect is topical, which occurs mainly through promotion of remineralization of early caries lesions and by reducing sound tooth enamel demineralization3.
